Today is World Oceans Day and around the world we're celebrating our beautiful oceans and all they provide for us. Here are 3 simple things you can do today to help save our oceans and marine animals.
Use less plastic
According to National Geographic, plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and entangle and kill tens of thousands of marine animals each year. So called ‘degrabable’ plastics are actually worse in some cases, as they quickly break down into thousands of tiny pieces which small marine animals eat.
A good place to start is to carry a reusable bottle and coffee cup, bring your own reusable tote when shopping, and avoid products packaged in plastic. Opt for no packaging, paper, glass or aluminium (which are both infinitely recyclable).
We love these straws from Clean Coast Collective as an alternative to plastic straws. Not only do they look great and come in a chic carrying case, their sales are used to fund clean-up, conservation and awareness projects.
In their words: Think about how long you use a plastic straw for – 5, 10 minutes? Maybe 30 minutes if you’re really savouring your drink. That plastic straw, which was manufactured from petroleum, shipped around the world, placed in your drink and then used for 10 minutes, will now exist for at least 100 years. Doesn’t seem right, does it?
Take 3 for the Sea
Always clean up after yourself when you’re enjoying the great outdoors, and while you’re at it pick up another few pieces of rubbish. Take 3 is an initiative that encourages us all to pick up 3 pieces of rubbish whenever we’re near the ocean and waterways, or anywhere for that matter!
There are also regular beach clean-ups organised by various community groups and organisations, so why not make a day of it and reward yourself with a picnic at the beach or park afterwards? You can find clean-up events by simply Googling clean-up + *your suburb or city*
As Take 3 says ‘lots of small individual actions can have a big impact on the planet’ so get to your nearest beach, and don’t forget to take some happy snaps and hashtag #take3forthesea.
As well as making day-to-day choices that are good for our environment and oceans, we can also use our voices and our votes to encourage political leaders to do what’s best for our planet.
According to AMCS “The Great Barrier Reef – our World Heritage icon – is in danger. Since early 2016, nearly half of shallow water corals have died due to heat stress caused by global warming.
This is a national emergency and the Australian government has failed to respond. Instead, it is courting Adani’s catastrophic Carmichael Coal Mine and failing to act on climate change.”
You can do your part and use your voice to take action by signing the petitions below, urging the Australian government to make a commitment to reduce greenhouse gases, and protect our reef from the proposed Adani coal mine.
So there you have it! 3 simple ways to help protect our oceans this #worldoceansday. Thanks to people like you who care a whole lot, we can create a bright future for our oceans and planet!
